Pioneers
Pioneers classes are also taught in mixed year groups based on need. The curriculum focusses on appropriate qualifications for life after TRHS. Subject skills are more functional, with a ‘real world’ age appropriate context.
- The main focus of the curriculum is to embed skills necessary for transition. Students have specific, targeted goals, which they are encouraged to set and evaluate themselves. These goals target the development of a range of life skills: including personal well-being, social awareness, citizenship and a sense of community. The curriculum supports these goals by offering subjects and experiences in areas such as Independent Travel, Enterprise, Careers Exploration, Presentation & Interview Skills, Work Experience, DofE, Health & Fitness, Volunteering and vocational subjects.
- Students receive independent careers advice from an experienced qualified careers advisor who is also a qualified life coach and emotional wellbeing practitioner. Students are prepared for their interviews and their voices, choices and aspirations are acknowledged. Students are provided with information about local employment opportunities, FE college courses etc.
- Pioneers are able to select their vocational and/or enrichment courses by means of options. The majority of the curriculum for these courses are from WJEC Entry Pathways or AQA Unit Awards, enabling the combination of units to gain an award, certificate or diploma sized qualification from Entry 2 to Level 2.
- Links with other providers supports the wider curriculum and enables students to access other provision; to generalise their skills in preparation for adulthood and the world of work. The local FE college and an independent training provider are supporting the delivery of vocational skills.
Students in sixth form set examples of correct attitude and behaviour to the students in lower years. This is achieved directly and indirectly, through a prefect system, acting as class helpers, lunchtime support, showing visitors around school, being members of school council etc.
By teaching the students independent life skills we are teaching them how to take care of themselves to enable them to live an independent life as they are able.
