Cooking Curriculum Statement

At Two Rivers we believe in preparing our pupils for life beyond school; to support them as they develop their independence, knowledge and skills for adulthood.

Many would consider that being able to cook is an essential life skill. In some families, learning to cook a meal from scratch is a familiar, shared activity, but this is not necessarily the case in all families.

Many people may not have the food knowledge, or skills, to cook from scratch and in some families, there is a reliance on pre-prepared or ready-cooked food.

Our pupils will be introduced to basic cooking skills by following recipes for increasingly complex dishes and learning how to use kitchen equipment safely. Recipes are underpinned with knowledge about sourcing food, nutrition, hygiene and food safety where relevant.

As pupils demonstrate their skills by following a recipe, their learning will be scaffolded, with the aim of building on and developing greater levels of personal independence.

Cross-curricular and cultural aspects of learning will be elements of lessons where relevant e.g., reading recipes, using scales, estimating time, identifying dates, tasting unfamiliar foods, etc. There will be emphasis on healthy eating & nutrition, supporting pupils to be aware of how food and exercise combine to promote not just physical health, but mental health too.
