Music Curriculum Statement

During music lessons at Two Rivers High School it is our intention to unlock pupil creativity, find hidden talents and build confidence. As well as developing instrumental skills and a knowledge of the elements of music, we feel it is also important for our learners to have both an understanding of, and an appreciation for various cultures and traditions outside of their own. Pupils learn to respect one another and work as a team when practicing and performing together.

Our aim is for our students to develop their skills across the elements of music including: tempo, timbre, dynamics, rhythm, pitch, texture, articulation and structure, composition, and appraisal of music performance both solo and ensemble.

Our students will have the opportunity to listen to, appraise and play a range of styles music; to play instruments on their own and within an ensemble whilst exploring the different elements of music; to make music of their own and to record their ideas. Students will have access to a wide variety of instruments: acoustic, electric, tuned and untuned percussion.  Students will use computer-based music applications such as Garage Band.

Cross-curricular and cultural aspects of learning will be elements of lessons where relevant and the study and playing of music can benefit students across all areas of school and home life, as it helps to build confidence and self-esteem and improve mental health, promotes freedom of expression, and helps to develop the ability to work closely with others. We hope that our students will enjoy an appreciation of different styles of music and be able to express their own preferences.
